The Gift of Megadere???

Howdy, been a while, no excuses here, but it’s time for anime love.

Gift, Eternal Rainbow
UFO?

Enter yet another ero game adaptation. Surprising to me is that I’m enjoying this one right now. Yes, the story is cliche. Yes, it’s obviously a Da Capo ripoff. But I’m enjoying it leagues more than Da Capo.

Basic plot involves a boy and his sort of sister. She’s not really his sister, but his dad took her in when she was young. They’re the same age, but she still calls him onii-chan. They had a tearful goodbye as children, and she comes back. Boy realizes that he’s in love with her and then the childhood friend gets out the razorblades. upset because she can’t cook him breakfast anymore. The humor is good though, and it’s got lovely character art.

The famous “Things I noticed” Section commences now:

Upper halves of the character look great on close ups.
Full characters look awkward, and almost feel like they have noodle legs.
Episode 5 with Rinka-chan was all sorts of win. I seem to have a soft spot for the sword wielding characters in these types of anime. Mai from Kanon, and now add Rinka, would be welcome in my anime harem someday. (Provided I wasn’t happily married of course….do I smell an H-game plot?)
Episode 5 also features the character with terrible cooking syndrome. This causes Rinka and Haruhiko to go some extreme lengths to get away from the chef. I find the terrible food plots to be very entertaining. Surprisingly, there was no one here that choked down the food in the end.
I’m finding the fake gift plot to be somewhat boring. Bring back Rinka-chan.

Better than some of the other ero game adaptations out there, it can hold it’s own in a battle royale with them all. Still it’s hard to beat the 800 pound gorilla of ero game adaptations this fall.

Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo!

Is there something on my face?

This show is also known as Megadere. I wonder why?

Mamoru goes to school at renowned academy for Beatrice’s. He gets there and meets Ayako. She’s all tsundere and about to whoop him one (she’s easily twice his size), when he gets all nice with her and cleans off a cherry blossom from her shoulder. Ayako falls in love and asks him out right there. Oh how I had that dream many a time when I was younger. I think I watched too many John Hughes movies when I was younger. Why I’m paralleling this show with John Hughes movies, I really don’t know, but it popped into my head as I was writing this. Annnyways, what the heck is a Beatrice? To be honest, I don’t know. See, I must confess, I watch things fansubbed, and the subs have stopped at all but one lovely episode of this compelling series. From what I gather, a Beatrice is kind of like some kind of magic user, but it seems more technological than just inherent powers.

Things I noticed:

Show looks great. It has the usual polish of a first episode. Nice character designs, although Mamoru kinda looks like a character from Super Mario Bros.

Shione is the queen of hair that doesn’t make sense. Like, wow. It was a nice touch that her brother mentioned it. (I still say Alice from Pumpkin Scissors hair does not make sense, but I hereby retract my statement about Momoko from Sumomo mo Momomo having hair that doesn’t make sense. A girl in Musashi Miyamoto also had hair like that so I stand corrected)

Ayako is really strong, like scary strong.

I don’t have much more to say, except that I really enjoyed the first episode. I hope for more subs to come sometime soon. In the meantime, a small fan effort maybe trying to gather steam, thanks to Kurogane. Please join #megadere on Rizon, if you want to help. To be honest we have a butt-ton of editors and QC, we really need translators and TL check, and eventually distro if this ever gets off the ground. Stop in and say “hi” even if you can’t help.

Needs more subs.

Five more to round out the season

While I haven’t said much in the last few days, I have been watching a lot of anime. Here’s some shorty reviews of five more series, to add to the six other new shows that I’m watching this fall.

Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi

Homer?

Period piece with intrigue, politics, monsters, and more cross gender hi-jinks. From the young girl who dresses like a boy, to the cross dressing young man, and it’s trap city. I don’t know if I really like this show yet. Not much has happened in the first two episodes I’ve seen, but I do like period pieces so this will get a few more viewings.

Death Note

Smile!

If you need to know what this is about, you’ve been living under a rock. Let’s not be lazy…Yagami Light happens upon a notebook that allows him to write people’s names in it and they die. Hilarity Death ensues, along with some mighty fine detective work. It’s good, really don’t have much to complain about though. This is one that I’m reading the manga at the same time. The anime is following the manga like a script, which is good if you’re a fan of the manga. It’s intriguing, I’ll keep watching.

Hataraki Man

Lips!

Look, characters that are over 18 years old. Look, they have real jobs. Look, they portray Japanese business as high stress. I like this show. I’ve seen one episode, and I’m hooked at this point. The character designs are interesting, and shoot for some kind of realism. Well…at least there’s lips on the women characters. The main character goes into “manly” mode when she needs to work hard, but the more interesting part is that she’s undersexed, and can’t get time with her boyfriend. And this gets extra point for having the ending theme from Densha Otoko (”Sekai wa sore o ai to yobundaze” by Sambomaster) playing in the background of one of the scenes.

Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na - Crescent Love

Not a trap!

I can’t even count how many H game adaptations are out this fall, but here’s another one. This one, so far, seems to be devoid of traps, and just looks like all around harem goodness. Add to that some meido powaa, and we’re all set. Hot part time job action, along with a little parody of the Iron Chef, makes this enjoyable fluff. Caution, it’s very fluffy.

Jigoku Shoujo - Futakomori

Ai's eyes

Jigoku Shoujo is back, with a vengeance new kimono. This is really more of the same here. If you watched last season, this is familiar territory. I really like this kind of thing so it stays on the watch list. To be honest watching something episodic like this is nice every once in a while. You can put it down whenever and pick it right back up whenever you need to feel like taking revenge on someone. Ai gets a new kimono, and the pretty lady in her entourage gets time as the doll with the red string to be pulled. For more on the first season see namakemono’s post.
