Oha-lucky

Hello all, anyone still read this thing :D

I’m looking to come back in the fall, maybe, if I can motivate myself to do so that is. In the meantime, I’ve been playing too much albatross18. Their new version is coming soon, so check it out, and look for kimaguresan if you want to play a round with me. Here’s a teaser of the new version

Winter season

We’re over a month into winter season and I think I’ve watched maybe three new shows. To top that off, I’m not really sure that I want to write so much about any of them. Aside from Nodame Cantabile, nothing is really interesting me. I will say this…how do you get me to watch a loli show like Manabi Straight?

Manabi

Horie Yui and

Mei

Hirano Aya

Add to that animation by ufotable and I’m sold.

New poll, and a new year

Ranpha Franboise

Hi all. Vacation is over, reality and work have set back in, and life begins again. I’ve torn myself away from Galaxy Angel for a bit (it’s all Xebek’s fault) to bring you a poll. I won’t say new, since I put it up a week or so ago when playing with the poll plugin.

I’ve long had this theory that some of the best anime has been adapted from the light novels. So I poked through and pulled a list and want your opinions. This year in particular had several book to anime adaptations so I only picked this years releases. Whether they were OVAs or full series. So let me know what you think. Personally my all time favorite that I couldn’t place on the poll is Twelve Kingdoms, but alas that series had nothing this year. At least the novels are getting translated and will be on US shores in March 2007, so that should help some.

No end of year lists here. Just a really good 2006 for anime. Looking forward to 2007, but I have no idea what I’m watching this winter. Apparently I need to be renting a pedobear suit to watch most of winter’s offerings, so we’ll be seeing how that goes.

Happy 2007 everyone. Looking forward to a fun year.

The happiest of Holidays to all

Hi folks,

Just wanted to pop in on my vacation and wish you all a happy holiday to all. No matter what you celebrate during this time, I hope you have a good one.

Kimagure

No more of this please

This fall season is one of the most active that I’ve had in both blogging and actually watching. I usually watch 4-5 series a season, and this fall I easily checked out about 15 of them. Not everything gets to stay and I’ve officially dropped two shows from the watch list.

With that said: Sayonara Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi and Happiness.

I just couldn’t get into Ayakashi. And to be honest I haven’t been too impressed with any series done by Bones aside from RahXephon. And I figure I’m the only one here that liked RahXephon.

Happiness was most likely too much harem anime in one season, but even with the entertaining Jun, this just didn’t cut it. That, combined with Artland being at the helm of the show pretty much killed it for me.

More on the rest of the stuff that I’m continuing to watch later.

Anime cliché attack. Round one: Childhood friends

Today, I’d like to break from the usual anime summaries. While my mid-season reviews are close to what I consider overdue, I have to stop and rant for a moment. I’m about to embark on something futile. Today I begin what I hope will be an occasional series of rants against anime clichés. Like I said, this is a futile effort, but there is only so much a person can take before the pressure cooker in their brain just goes boom. This is futile because there is absolutely no way anything can or will change. People and fans are just way too happy with the status quo, or if they’re not happy they’re certainly okay with it. People flock to the familiar, and like to be warm and fuzzy. I’m not criticizing the people that enjoy these shows, because I’m one of those people. I know what I like and I sit through many clichés usually without flinching. So onto the futility, and I hope to find more shining examples of anime clichés that deserve rants such as this.

Today I will rant about the childhood friend character type. Spoilers ahoy for Gift: Eternal Rainbow, and possibly other anime.

I was recently introduced to Gift: Eternal Rainbow. In this Da Capoesque exercise where it vaguely feels like a blatent rip off of Da Capo (even the school uniforms are similar), we are introduced to three main characters. Amami, our hero and male lead for the show, his non blood-related sister, Riko, who’s the same age as him, and finally Kirino, his childhood friend. For most readers, particularly those who have seen Da Capo, someone in this triangle is about to find they have no leg to stand on. In this case, we don’t have to think too hard about what’s to happen in this situation. Kirino is about to find herself in the all too familiar world of the childhood friend cliché. As much as you love her, Nayuki from Kanon, or even Kaede from Shuffle, you can’t deny they’re all either screwed or about to be. And this is not screwed in the good sense of the word. These lovely ladies have doted on their male counterparts for years, and always seem to lose at the last minute. Let’s get something straight, I’m not here to complain about the situation they set themselves up for, it’s how they handle it that started to bug me.

All in all at some point the main male lead has to break the news that he’s in love with someone else and our childhood friend ends up breaking down and lying that she’s fine. Some go psycho, some take it well, some don’t have time to say much since the show ends, and some continue to fight on provided there are episodes to continue with. I’m here to complain about the last category. When Kaede lost her cool and went nuts after Rin revealed his love for Asa, it was somewhat different and a welcome change. So Kirino in Gift, after finding out that Riko didn’t play fair, basically says that she’s not giving up. Because even though Amami has said multiple times that he’s in love with the lovely Riko, she just won’t take no for an answer.

So Riko and Amami end up looking like this. I want to punch Amami in the mouth. Kasuga Kyouske (from Kimagure Orange Road) taught every anime male that wishy washiness is a good thing. Grow a spine Amami, tell her again that she’s wasting her time, and end it here. I don’t want to see five more episodes of Gift that center around Kirino’s efforts. I want to see Amami and Riko enjoy some wonderful days together in happiness. This is not that much to ask really. Shuffle had a win here as well, at least Rin and Asa had an episode before she got sick. My original negative review against shuffle earlier this year was probably not as fair as it could’ve been. I was again ranting on cliches, but it’s not as bad as I made it out to be.

So now we get to watch more episodes of Gift and it looks like Kirino is going to counter Riko’s gift with something else in the hopes that she will be able to win Amami’s love back from Riko. The reality of this situation is that Amami should have stopped her, but didn’t. Kirino should grow a spine and start living for herself and give up hanging on the crutch that is Amami.

I’ll admit that I’m possibly being premature here. If the writers come back and hand the win to Kirino, I’ll be back and unhappy. If this plays out with Riko winning this race then I’ll go with it. If Rinka-chan shows up and takes care of business then I’ll rescind this whole rant and never write one again.

So what do you think? Please comment and argue if you think I’m way off. I’m just one person, with one opinion.

I’ll have more Anime cliché attacks in the future.

For a final thought, I continue to watch and enjoy my anime even though it’s full of clichés, because to be frank and very honest. Anime is fun to watch. ANIME BANZAI!!!. Apologies to Jeff.

Zero news at this time

Ouch!!!

Did you know it’s the end of the fiscal year? Until I started working for the US government I only cared about things like a calendar year. Now the world revolves around the end of September. So in a week I can say happy new year to you all, and my life might actually turn back to normal for a while. Excuses, excuses.

Zero no Tsukaima

I started watching this little gem just recently. It’s pretty good fun and the plot just got semi interesting. Amid the “Oh God, Louis is hot” this show is not bad, and I’m glad I looked at it. More as it wraps up.

I also expect to get to wrap ups of Gunbuster 1 and 2, Simoun, and a semi-oldie but all-goodie Fuujin Monotogari (Windy Tales).

Sometime in there I also expect to see the Fall season start, just in time for the new year, and to be honest, I don’t know what I’m watching. Aside from Kanon, which has me drooling like a super Keyfan, please take this time to suggest something you think I might like, or that you’d like to see me write about.

Until then…Budget fooooooooooooooooooooo…

A Collaborator appears

I’d like to introduce the second member of the kimagure blogging team. Namakemono will begin to chime in shortly with his opinions of anime as well. I’m hoping that this will not only increase post frequency here, but also add a little something. You see…namakemono is really new to anime. With that it’s our opportunity to learn something from the fan that isn’t seasoned like most of us. I’ve been doing the anime thing for almost 20 years, and for him, it’s a little under 20 weeks. Thanks to me, he’s a true convert and has been gorging on anime since he visited my lovely household back in March.

So I’m to blame for his otakuness, but let’s hear that from him.

Please welcome namakemono to the Kimagure Anime Blog staff, may he blog well.

….I just called him part of the staff, how funny is that.

No time for love Dr. Jones

Yikes…Last post was April 13th.  That’s depressing.  I got stuck painting some rooms inside my house so blogging time has been lagging.  I should be posting soon.  Got a few new shows that I want to talk about so you’ll be seeing those soon.  Until then…

Random Musings

It’s been a while since my last post. Life has come at me a little fast and annoying lately, but I’m back now to vent…er…write about some anime.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

I’ve never really been one for the Mahou Shoujo genre, but after idling in the Animeblogger IRC channel, and getting thwacked by Fate-chan a few times, I figured I’d better find out what this was all about before I got into anymore trouble with Fate-chan. I’m happy to say that I’ve finished watching the first season of the show. I enjoyed it. I don’t think I got anything profound out of the show, but it was good entertainment. I’ll leave it at that. I will be watching Nanoha A’s shortly.

Rec

I still love this show. The small doses it comes in are very spot on, but I think a proper season of the show certainly would be welcome in my home.

Karin

I hate vampires. In fact, the occult pretty much annoys me. This little show about the blood making vampire Karin, really amuses me for some reason. It’s rather standard boy meets girl vampire, boy cleans up girl vampire’s nosebleed/keeps her secret, boy and girl vampire fall in love. The show has also had some rather dismal moments, but always seems to redeem itself when Karin’s family gets involved. I should be more specific, that Karin’s mother and father are actually quite a pair. Her brother is a little too bishounen for me, and the episode where they focused on his past was pretty lame. Karin’s grandmother, whom everyone mistook for Karin, even though her hair was about 10 times longer, also was somewhat annoying. But for some reason it’s amusing. Sort of a guilty pleasure.

Shuffle!

I posted a while back about me starting this show.  I haven’t gotten past episode 3.  There may be a post called “Stopping Shuffle!” very very soon.

Shakugan no Shana

The show ended at the 24th episode. It was left rather wide open, and they’ve already announced a movie, so open is good. I’ll watch more if they make it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

I’ve been watching this show on Cartoon Network as it’s been airing. It ends next week, so I’ll have more thoughts on it after I see it to completion. Preliminary to that post: I think it’s a pretentious piece of crap. I’ve seen some creative ways to cut budgets in a show, but this one has more than I imagined. More next week.

School Rumble Second Semester

Words cannot express my excitement at the return of this show. This is one of my top all time favorite shows.

And finally:

Kage Kara Mamoru

Watching this show cannot be called a guilty pleasure. You’re just guilty of watching bad anime if you watch this. I’m watching it, but I don’t know why. I feel like a poker player that has a bad pocket pair, and I’ve bet so much that I just have to finish it to completion. You know you’re gonna go bust at the end, but you just have to see what the other guy has. I hope it ends soon.
